'The Effects of Modern Technology on Visual Art' Article

http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/245944/the_effects_of_modern_technology_on.html

It's 4 years old, so it's like, TOTALLY out dated. but it's a good source for me so far

2nd Year BEGINS

and it starts with a presentation about the flux of design. whatever a flux is. i always just thought of as the intergral part of an awesome time machine.

I THINK we've been asked to talk about the changes of design and illustration through the years and how it's changing now.

I want to talk about how design changes and what designers do to move on.

Designers like Milton Glaser, famous for taking his major influences from past art and far away cultures.

I've also been assigned to talk about technology in design and illustration. I'd like to avoid talking too much about Photoshop because it's such an obvious and over used technology to talk about. but i think I'll have to mention it

Final animation again

Just to tie up the project on the blog, heres the final animation again. ENJOY

Process Shots

I've just noticed there isn't a sketchbook hand-in and i have a few things in my sketchbook that i thing are important parts of preparation towards my final animation.

I stared with a few words that i thought of when listening to the music

these are some very early ideas. i thought about more obscure work at first.

And here are some images that i drew and found

Figuring out how to sort the background out. explained in a previous post

The 12 cells i had to make the circlular hand motion thing i used in the final video
Robot design ideas

Steam you make see through out the final video came from this drawing i scanned in and painted over

FINISHED!

Here it is. I like it. not loads and loads, but i like it. it's been a very good starting point to get me used to the basics of after effects.

City Cycle

And this is the genius wheel of landscape in action. I've already tried it in my animation and it works well. here it is on it's own

Walking cycle test

Landscape for my Walking Contraption animation

I meant to have a go at making a video using something like this to make a stop motion, and i still might, but for now, i'm using this little handy peace for my After Effects work...
It's simply just a circle with the landscape of a city around the edge. as it rotates, the city looks more and more destroyed. I can make this rotate 360ยบ once in time with the walking.

Final contraption

And here are some of the main pieces that will make the full contraption. i plan on parenting certain points and making some -hopefully- reasonably good looking physics!

Style development

This first drawing I did at work. it's not a style i've done before, but quite enjoy thinking about the character of the contraption and it's different features. I'd like people to look at this and wonder what it is and what it does. I'm trying to capture the crazy unpredictable nature of the song i've been given.
Something with a bit of watercolouring. More of a landscape design than a creature. With the contraption moving along the landscape, realistically, i wouldn't be able to keep up this amount of detail for the whole landscape in the time i have

Updated storyboard

Probably very complicated to do within about 2 weeks (with an essay to do to!!1) but I'm going for it. if i get a nice dynamic walking cycle it should look good!

It'll be like Howl's Moving Castle but without the crack team of crazy Japanese animators and very basic After Effects skills

Saturday 16 April 2011

I've decide to have a go at doing an animation involving a walking character like Howl's Moving Castle from Studio Ghibli's film... Howl's Moving Castle.

I figure if i parent separate animations to a larger drawing, I could get a really dynamic animation that way!

'Round of applause'

playing around with this animation i rotascoped. using sliding pictures and things

Franz Ferdinand - Take me out

Just got reminded of this on a music channel. it's the sort of style i want to go with. the shaky collage effect, but with metal textures and a bit of a darker slower pace to match the music.

Upload time

RIGHT THEN, now i know how to upload so i get get a couple of my animation experiments on the screen!

lets start with the first thing i did. I still have an abundance to electrical tape from the first project we did at Uni...

This kind of stop motion, for a smooth nice animation, really needs to be in a studio with a nice clean constant light, not with the light from an overcast day like me!

Beautiful hand drawn animation music video to another great tune from Blockhead

As..bonkers as it is, it's still got a narrative, i'd like to do something like this. it really keeps you watching

Wednesday 30 March 2011

Brilliant choatic animation.

to a super cool tune from crystal castles

Xxzxcuzx Me Video from Crabfood on Vimeo.

I’ve got this song to work with. Crazy tune. I’m going to try and stay away from the easy trap of random scenes and surreal shots. just seems a little predictable. I’m going to try and add some narrative to it. Maybe something with a robot…

NEW PROJECT

And Print to Pixel is it's name!

We've all been given a peace of music to work with to create an animation that works with the music.

I have been given i piece by JSBach, the Baroque composer. Although i am not happy with this (i find the music void of many good ideas for me and hope to switch choice), I have had a listen and wrote a few words that the piece of music reminds me of.

Rich, Pompous, Chase (low notes vs. high notes), imitation, repetition, BIG WIGS, formal dance.

I can obviously do work to this, but I won't enjoy it as much as i could with another piece, seeing as this piece of music reminds me of a bunch of rich pompous people born into a world of rich, pompousness. Laughing at poor, unfortunate people who have every available disease and infection available in the 18th Century... even though the rich people probably ave syphilis aswell.

Additional photography print.

I also decide to produce an A3 print of this photograph:

The reason the shadows are blurred like that is because i use a long light with multiple tiny LED lights on it, creating seperate shadows for each light. It really gives it a feeling of fast movement. AND NO PHOTOSHOP WAS USED! these are straight from the camera on to a printer.

Final Poster Prints.

Here is my final GF Smith Paper poster. A simple idea using my folding i had been using for the project, and Print, for the text. I wanted to spiral the paper around the text, it all revolves around the details of the poster. Design 101 right there.

Attempting final poster designs.

Here are a few attempts at a final photograph of my work. I'm finding this part a little frustrating actually, trying to get the lighting right and everything.

These are my favourite four out of them all that i have taken. i quite like the fact that you sometimes can't tell what the forms are when they blend together.

BIRDS!

Heres a bit of a theme i've got going on.

Here is a doodle i did a few weeks ago that I now realise could be quite relevant to this project.

I discussed this during an assessment and we thought this looks like a flock of birds. This could be a very good final piece idea.

Richard Sweeney Session #3

3D Forms/Structures using repeating shapes.

I went with triangles to keep with the theme that I have. I also went to my sketchbook for any ideas i might have sketched out that could be relevant.
I found these little sketches

and tried to do something similar

I also continued exploring the zig zag. i found a way to curve the sheet. make this big enough and the right shape and you have a sphere.

Large Zig-Zag Pattern

It took my a couple hours, but I managed to do an A1 version of the zig zag folding pattern. I've still yet to find anything too exciting or beneficial with having it this size, but i will continue to play around with it.

Properties of a zig-zag pattern...

After deciding that I want to continue with the idea of tessellation/zig-zag folding I've been thinking about the properties of this type of pattern. how it bends and moves, and how i can incorporate this into a final piece.

And some drawings of a preliminary idea i have for a larger piece:
